God, Our Creator

In the kids ministry this past week, we talked about God creating everything. We specifically focused on how God created Adam and Eve. One thing we talked about is what it looks like to be “created in God’s image.” It doesn’t necessarily mean that we look like God, it points more to having similar qualities to God. We have emotions. We are able to make decisions based on our moral compass (although that is now warped due to the fall). We can love and care for others. We also are beings that are created to create.

This thought, that we were created to create, has resonated with me. I have always considered myself a pretty “artsy” person. I do calligraphy, I love to sing and play instruments, and I like making things for gifts. But lately, I have been learning to watercolor. This is a picture of what I made one evening last week. Everything that I painted that evening was made using a reference picture. I used someone else’s watercolor painting, or a picture of something to use as a guide to create each of these doodles. This is what artists do, especially beginners. But even professional artists still use reference pictures, people, or scenery to make sure that the details of their art aligns with the real world.

But God didn’t do that when He created this world. He didn’t have anything. What He created came from nothing. The only “reference” that God had when He created the world was Himself. I think that is why verses like Psalm 19:1 make so much sense: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. They glorify Him not only because He created them, but also because He was the reference for the creation.

So as you go forward this week, take a look around you. Really stop and look at creation. Look at it less of a beautiful sunset or gorgeous forest. If you really take the time to study creation, you may just get a more in depth look at our Creator.

All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16b-17
